Maui is an awesome kiteboarding destination, and each year more people make Maui their go to spot, whether escaping their winter or looking for the best most reliable winds in summer. With more new kiters arriving each day, we are constantly answering the same sorts of questions; Where is the best place to kite on Maui? and what are the local hazards?, and Are there any local rules to worry about?
IKO Certification Standards
The International Kiteboarding Organization provides a standardized skills list for kiteboarders. All the IKO Certification Standards are the necessary kiteboarding skills that are listed in the order recommended by instructors for the most logical progression. All of the skills on the chart are considered essential for any Kiteboarder to be considered Independent. There are three phases of the IKO progression, Beginner, Intermediate, and Independent. And that is just where it gets interesting. Every IKO kiteboarding school can show you the IKO standards Poster, and the standards are available n the Kiteboarder Workbook provided by your IKO Instructor. This is a great way for students and kiteboarders to assess their skill level.
